Daftest F1 markets yet?
I wonder how much trade Sky Bet have seen on these two rather bizarre F1 markets?
“Clean Sweep”
Will any driver win every race of the 2008 season?
100/1 – Kimi Raikkonen
200/1 – Lewis Hamilton
250/1 – Fernando Alonso
“Always on Pole”
Will any driver start every race from Pole Position?
150/1 – Kimi Raikkonen
250/1 – Lewis Hamilton
300/1 – Fernando Alonso
It goes without saying that no driver in the history of the sport has ever achieved either of these feats. Even at the height of his dominance, Michael Schumacher could only manage thirteen wins from the eighteen races of the 2004 season (72%). In percentage terms that is actually the second most successful season for a driver on record. In 1952 Alberto Ascari managed to see the chequered flag six times from eight races (75%).
In terms of qualifying, Nigel Mansell managed an astonishing fourteen poles from sixteen races in 1992 (88%). Ayrton Senna (twice – in 1988 and 1989) and Alain Prost (1993) both managed to achieve thirteen from sixteen (81%).
The likelihood of either event happening in 2008 is remote and in fairness the prices offered reflect this. I can’t help but dwell on the fact that, historically at least, it would appear that the prices for the Pole Position market are more generous that those for the Race Wins… 150/1 about Kimi anyone?
